The 10-Minute Routine That is Changing Everything at Our School

The ‘Rocket Run’

Big things are happening at our little primary school, and it’s all down to a simple 10-minute morning routine! The ‘Rocket Run,’ is no ordinary jog around the playground! Well, actually… it is. The morning run routine is becoming a cornerstone of our school’s DNA and teachers and students alike are all in on it! In this blog post we’ll take you through how the ‘Rocket Run’ is improving our students health, well-being, and academic success.

How the ‘Rocket Run’ took off:

Let me be clear, we didn’t invent running in the morning. However, making it simple, efficient and combining it with a captivating theme, really did ignite our enthusiasm for exercise. But what does running have to do with rockets? We gave the our students and staff the  o collectively run the distance from Earth to Mars, albeit scaled down by a factor of 1/100,000. Here’s how it works:

– We’ve designed two tracks on our playground—a 100-meter loop and a 150-meter loop. This ensures that every student, regardless of their pace, can participate and feel like part of the team.
– The genius lies in adding up all those distances. As students complete laps, a designated teacher stands at the start/finish line, giving each student a high-five as they pass. By multiplying the number of high-fives by the lap length, we calculate the total distance for the class.
– To make it even easier, we’ve created a QR code system for teachers to input distances on their phones. The school total is then prominently displayed on a beautiful board in a communal area, fueling motivation among our students.

The Rocket Run: From Earth to Mars

The “Rocket Run” is a captivating concept that resonates with both students and staff. The goal is to collectively run the distance from Earth to Mars, albeit scaled down by a factor of 1/1000. Here’s how it works:

– We have two tracks on our playground, a 100-meter loop and a 150-meter loop.
– As students run, they receive high-fives from their peers for each lap completed.
– The total number of high-fives is recorded and submitted via a QR code.
– This data is then added to the school’s cumulative total, which is prominently displayed on a beautiful board in a communal area.

The Benefits of Running for Children’s Well-Being, Health, and Academia

The “Rocket Run” is more than just a fun morning activity; it’s a catalyst for positive change. Here’s how this daily run is making a significant impact:

1. Enhanced Well-Being: Regular exercise, like our morning run, promotes mental well-being by triggering the release of endorphins—the “feel-good” hormones. As a result, our students arrive at class in a happier, more positive state of mind.

2. Improved Health: Running is a fantastic way to maintain physical health. It enhances cardiovascular fitness, builds muscular strength, and helps maintain a healthy weight. Our students are not just running towards Mars; they’re running towards a healthier future.

3. Academic Success: Research consistently shows that physical activity boosts cognitive function. Running helps our students sharpen their focus and enhances memory and problem-solving skills. This translates to better academic performance.

4. Conflict Reduction: The “Rocket Run” has an unexpected but welcome benefit—it reduces conflicts among students. Engaging in a shared physical activity fosters camaraderie and teamwork, minimizing classroom disruptions.

Conclusion: A No-Brainer for Our School

In just 10-12 minutes, the “Rocket Run” has made a world of difference at our school. The benefits are undeniable—happier, more content, and focused students, improved academic results, and minimized conflicts in the classroom. It’s a no-brainer, and we believe every school should consider adopting a similar morning routine. Your school needs the “Rocket Run”!
